今回は、日本の自動販売機に関する和文の英訳7回目。

グーグル翻訳 vs ポケトークで勝ったのはどっち？

和文

「オランダの自販機は悪くないですが、フランス・パリの自販機は、たまに、お金を入れたのに商品が引っかかって出てこなかったりします。」

英訳

Vending machines in the Netherlands aren’t bad, but vending machines in Paris, France sometimes get stuck, but the goods don’t come out even if you put in the money.

※get stuck は「商品が出てこない=引っかかる」の意味。

グーグル翻訳、ポケトークとも、和文につられて主語がおかしい部分がある。結果、意味内容が奇妙。

「自販機そのものが引っかかっている」（Vending machines … get stuck … グーグル翻訳）

「自販機そのものが出てこない」（but vending machines … don’t come out … ポケトーク）

ポケトークは「フランス・パリ」を「フランスパリ」と認識した上、フランスとパリを別個の地名と捉えてしまっている（France and Paris ）。

直訳ではないが、同じ意味で自然な英語にするなら…

Vending machines in the Netherlands aren’t bad, but in Paris, France, there are some cases in which the product gets stuck in the machine, and you end up not getting what you have paid for.

くらいか…。

※Paris, France のように「街　コンマ　国」という順に表記する際、その後にも文が続く場合、国の後にコンマを入れる必要がある（「in Paris, France, there are」のところ）。

※人を主語にして「商品を受け取れない」にしてみた。

※end up　…で終わるのようなニュアンス。
